Oh, I loved this. The mixing of the themes, the shaping of this story.
I wrote (but didn't wind up using) a non-fiction entry on firebuilding, and on the Girl Scouts where this is the sort of thing I always thought should have been part of the experience but never was. Too much "girl" and not enough "scout" in the program, at least in my experience.
I LOVE that the boys are allowed to try again and again, to refine their technique and learn from their mistakes. That is the best way to learn, and so rarely offered unless you're secretly working on stuff in your room.
They may not always believe in themselves, but they believe in the group. Wonderful phrasing, and that came across perfectly here in their discussions and re-trials and in the way you wove in the movie.
