What a cool story, and beautifully told as usual! :) I know that my family changed our last name when we came over to the US in the early 1900s, but my family just dropped a silent "g" from our last name, nothing quite so drastic as living on with a completely different surname! I guess it would have been quite a scandal back in those days.
