At the time, I'm not sure it felt as much freeing as it did resignation. But I do remember deciding that, if I was going to be made fun of for something, it might as well be something I truly enjoyed, that truly represented me. I remain forever grateful to my high school journalism teacher who helped me be myself and speak up to more than just my little circle of friends.
