I'm also tickled by how appropriate Grandma's name became. That's the only way I ever knew her, though, and I remember being somewhat confused when Dad would tell me that the grandfather I knew was not his father. You see, John Omer Wilson died of a heart attack while my grandma was pregnant with my dad, so none of us ever got to know him. I've always referred to him as my biological grandfather, because to me, my grandfather was David Heritage.

Like you, I've often wondered about the nature of the relationship between Fannie and George, and why she didn't accept his proposal. I think the "I'm not worthy" line was a gentle way of letting him down, but I have no idea why. She had two children from her late husband, so you would think she would want the financial help. But then again, she was running a boarding house and maybe enjoyed her independence.

George certainly knew about his son, even if he didn't come forward and tell him who he was. I'd like to think that he kept an eye out for him somehow, behind the scenes. You know, attending baseball games in the crowded bleachers and the like. That could make a really interesting fiction piece! Even though George didn't get to have a life with Fannie, he certainly had a large, close extended family of brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Perhaps that was enough for him.
