I don't have kids of my own yet (though I'm so ready for it), but my sister has taken the attitude with my niece that "things" don't matter nearly as much as "experiences," which I just love. Sure, she has her toys and her clothes and her books (and books and books and books), but if they have extra money, my sister prefers to take my niece out on a fun and exciting trip somewhere. Toys are only around for a short time, but memories can last a lifetime. :)
(Side note: when I worked at a children's clothing store, I always told people that were shopping for a baby shower or something to get onesies that were bigger than the 0-3 months size - new parents will get a lot of those and they won't even fit after a month or two!)
